Different Grades Of Body Armor Have Different Materials

Body armor can be divided into police type and military type. From a material perspective, bulletproof vests can be divided into software, hardware and soft-hard composite materials. Body armor is mainly composed of a jacket and a bulletproof layer. Jackets are usually made of chemical fiber fabrics, while the ballistic layer is mainly made of metal. Body armor is divided into six grades, and the materials of different grades are different. The following is a specific analysis.
Bulletproof level, there are many standards abroad, but the NIJ standard in the United States is commonly used. This standard has 6 levels, namely: Level Ⅰ, Level ⅡA, Level Ⅱ, Level ⅢA, Level Ⅲ, Level Ⅳ. The requirements for the six classes of body armor vary:
Class I: .22LR bare lead ammunition weighing 40 grains, with a speed of about 308-332 m/s, .38 Special with a speed of about 244-274 m/s, .22 LR or . 38 revolver.
Level IIA: 9mm Parabellum fully armored bullet weighing 124 grains and a speed of about 320-344 m/s. .357mm Magnum soft-tip bullet weighing 158 grains and a speed of about 366-396 m/s. A typical 9mm semi-automatic pistol or .357 revolver.
Level II: 9mm Parabellum fully armored 124-grain, 346-376 m/s velocity, .357mm Magnum soft-tip long gun, 158-grain, 410-440 m/s velocity Pistol ammunition fired from a barrel pistol or short-barreled submachine gun.
Level IIIA: .44 Magnum hollow point bullet weighing 240 grains and having a speed of about 411 to 442 meters/second. 9mm Parabellum fully armored bullet weighing 124 grains and having a speed of about 411 to 442 meters/second. A pistol cartridge fired from a long-barreled carbine.
Level III: A 7.62 mm fully armored projectile weighing 147 grains and having a speed of approximately 823 to 853 m/s. An ordinary projectile launched by the M14.
Level IV: .30-06 armor-piercing projectile weighing 166 grains and having a speed of about 853 to 884 meters per second. An armor-piercing projectile launched by the M1 Garand.
Body armor above level IIIA is hard body armor. Its main material is made of metal, ceramics and other composite materials. They use their high hardness to block bullet penetration and achieve bulletproof purposes. Although bulky, its cost is low. It is capable of withstanding rifle fire. Generally, most foreign customers require the protection level of body armor to be Level IIIA.
Body armor below level IIIA is soft body armor, and its main material is composed of high-strength fibers such as Kevlar and other fiber materials. This kind of bulletproof vest is suitable for wearing, light, soft and flexible, but its cost is relatively high. They block the penetration of bullets in a high-strength way to achieve bulletproof purposes. Unfortunately, today's soft body armor can only provide varying levels of protection against the most common low- and medium-velocity pistol bullets. Level I is the lowest protection level, which can only protect against attacks by 0.22RL inch pistol bullets and 0.38 inch pistol bullets, but it can be worn inside a suit, has the characteristics of small mass, good concealment, and does not hinder the wearer's flexible movement; IV It is the highest level of individual body armor and is specially designed for high-risk combat environments.
This article mainly introduces the main materials of the six levels of body armor. The most powerful body armor recognized in active service is the American interceptor aircraft. When the interceptors are combined with tactical vests, KM-2 Kevlar and boron carbide ceramic flash plates, their protection level rises to Level 4, providing soldiers on the battlefield with the highest level of field protection currently in the world.
